Back into Learning: How We Welcome New Learners to Red Balloon Worthing

Starting a new school or education centre can feel overwhelming — especially for young people who’ve spent time out of education due to anxiety, bullying, trauma or other challenges. At Red Balloon Worthing, we understand that re-engaging with learning takes time, trust and a nurturing environment.

Our approach begins well before a learner steps into the classroom. We work closely with families and professionals to develop an individualised transition plan. This might include informal visits, quiet tours of the centre, or relaxed meet-and-greets with staff in a calm space.

Once learners are ready to join us, we take things slowly. Some learners begin with just an hour or two a day, building up their time at a pace that suits them. Each learner is supported by a dedicated key adult who checks in daily, builds trust, and becomes a consistent, reassuring presence.

We also support the emotional and social side of rejoining education. Our wellbeing and therapy teams provide 1:1 sessions and creative outlets to help learners feel safe and heard.

“No one rushed me — they gave me time. It was the first time I felt listened to.”

We celebrate every step, no matter how small. From saying hello to joining a lesson or taking part in a group activity, each milestone is a win. Learners at Red Balloon don’t just go back to learning — they rediscover their confidence and curiosity along the way.
