At Red Balloon Worthing, we believe that education is about far more than exams. It’s about becoming confident, kind, curious and compassionate individuals. That’s why SMSC development is at the heart of everything we do, helping our learners grow not just academically, but personally and socially too.

What is SMSC?

SMSC stands for:

  • Spiritual – exploring beliefs, reflecting on life’s big questions, and developing inner strength
  • Moral – understanding right and wrong, making responsible choices, and respecting others
  • Social – learning how to work with others, developing communication skills, and becoming active members of a community
  • Cultural – celebrating diversity, learning about different traditions and viewpoints, and appreciating the world around us

How We Support SMSC at Red Balloon Worthing

SMSC isn’t a one-off lesson, it’s part of our daily life. Here’s how it happens:

🧘‍♀️ Spiritual

  • Time for self-reflection and mindfulness
  • Creative expression through art, writing and music
  • Respect for different beliefs, cultures and values

⚖️ Moral

  • Clear boundaries and respectful relationships
  • Discussions on ethics, fairness and justice
  • Support in learning how to manage conflict and make good choices

🤝 Social

  • Group projects and community days
  • Collaborative learning and peer support
  • Building empathy, confidence and communication skills

🌍 Cultural

  • Celebrating events like Black History Month, Pride and cultural holidays
  • Exploring global issues and current events
  • Encouraging open-mindedness and curiosity

Learner Voice Matters

Our learners are active participants in shaping the culture of our Centre. We listen to their views, encourage debate and discussion, and give them space to explore their values and beliefs.

🎤 “Red Balloon helps me be myself and think about the world in a new way.” – Learner quote
